The tradition holds that Holger sleeps beneath Kronborg Castle in Helsingør (the same castle Shakespeare used as the setting for Hamlet) and will awaken if Denmark is ever in mortal danger. During World War II, the Danish resistance movement named itself after Holger Danske, demonstrating the enduring power of the legend. A famous statue of the sleeping hero by H.P. Pedersen-Dan sits in the casemates of Kronborg to this day.
